Culinary Class Series: Plant-Based Cooking for Cancer Prevention

In 2022, CHECoE hosted this six-part virtual cooking series with Chef Afi Green. The series provided step-by-step instructions and recipe cards for attendees.

Mindful Meditation Series

In 2022, the CHECoE education team created this series in conjunction with the Elixir Fund to provide free virtual guided meditation to community members.

Doctor Radio

In April 2022, staff member Monica Gilles, MAS, RRT, NCTTP, Clinical Care Coordinator, joined Doctor Radio powered by NYU Langone Health on Sirus XM to discuss tobacco cessation. With an estimated 8.3 million channel subscribers on the Sirus XM network, Doctor Radio provides 24/7 medical education programming from doctors and medical experts.

Skin Health Programming

In March 2022, CHECoE successfully launched a community education program for skin health at the Integrity House Women's Wellness Center in Newark.

Tobacco Education

In 2022, Monica J. Gilles, MAS, RRT, NCTTP, Clinical Care Coordinator, began providing tobacco education to high school and youth programs throughout the state. In 2023, she completed her certification to provide tobacco cessation counseling to youth from the American Lung Association.

EBC Radio

In April 2023, staff members Hiral Shulka and Sabeen Roykera joined Alka Agrawal, EBC Radio 1170AM owner and Community Cancer Action Board member, to answer questions from the South Asian community on cancer prevention and education. EBC Radio has over 500,000 listeners and is the largest South Asian Radio station in New Jersey.

RUYES Program

In 2023, CHECoE expanded the Community Scientist Program with a tailor-made program for RUYES (Rutgers Youth Enjoy Science) students. The RUYES program seeks to encourage youth from underrepresented groups in the biomedical sciences to pursue cancer research and other health care careers.

Dr. Coral O. Omene

Dr. Coral O. Omene

Program Director, Breast Cancer Disparities Research

Medical Oncologist Coral Omene, M.D., Ph.D., is the Program Director of Breast Cancer Disparities Research at Rutgers Cancer Institute. Dr. Omene and Community Cancer Action Board Chairperson Dorothy Reed co-facilitated a virtual town hall, “Enhancing Awareness: Increasing Participation of Black Women in Cancer Clinical Trials.” Dr. Omene’s caravan series, “Let's Journey Together: Ride Our Caravan Advancing Equity to a Healthier Future with Breast Cancer” consisted of two virtual town halls and one in-person event held on May 19, 2023, at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. The series provided resources, benefits, and opportunities for enrolling in clinical trials, support for making informed decisions, and encouraged all to be a part of the solution in increasing awareness and improving breast cancer survival rates.

Dr. Eileen White

Deputy Director and Chief Scientific Officer

In June 2022, Deputy Director and Chief Scientific Officer Eileen White, Ph.D., led a world-class team of Rutgers Cancer Institute researchers to a $25 million Cancer Grand Challenges grant. This support helps the team address the condition of cancer cachexia, a wasting syndrome that causes a dramatic amount of weight loss and fatigue. Cancer Grand Challenges is a global funding platform, co-founded by Cancer Research UK and the National Cancer Institute in the US, which encourages a community of diverse, global teams to come together, think differently, and take on some of cancer’s toughest challenges. CHECoE provided Dr. White with assistance in identifying suitable community members to join her patient advocacy board.

Dr. Julia Chen-Sankey

Dr. Julia Chen-Sankey

Assistant Professor

Social and behavioral public health scientist and prominent faculty member of the Rutgers Institute for Nicotine & Tobacco Studies, Julia Chen-Sankey, Ph.D., M.P.P., was the recipient of the CI/FDA Pathway to Independence Award in Tobacco Regulatory Science (K99/R00). This award expands Dr. Chen-Sankey's research on the effects of tobacco marketing on young adults' neurocognitive reactions and their desire to smoke. Dr. Chen Sankey also received pilot funding from CHECoE to assist in her research on the use of FDA-authorized e-cigarettes to quit smoking among vulnerable and underrepresented populations who smoke cigarettes.

Funding Our Partners

Each year, CHECoE provides funding to various community organizations and partners throughout the state. These partnerships are made possible in part through our ScreenNJ state appropriation under the direction of the New Jersey Department of Health. Learn more about future funding opportunities.

Sister2Sister

Co-founder of Sister2Sister, Dorothy Reed, is our first CCAB chairperson and also a passionate community member. Sister2Sister directly reaches minority and underserved breast cancer survivors. Through ScreenNJ, Sister2Sister provided four Informal Listening Circle Workshops and two cohorts where attendees addressed the need to raise awareness and the importance of sharing family history.

Jazz for Prostate Cancer Awareness

As the founder of Jazz for Prostate Cancer Awareness and a dedicated CCAB member, Ralph Stowe regularly collaborates with us for special events. Jazz for PCA brings live jazz music and awareness on prostate cancer to communities throughout the state, and Stowe shares his cancer survivor story while disseminating education materials to attendees.

Diversity in Clinical Trials

CHECoE provides support to ensure clinical trial enrollment reflects the multicultural population of New Jersey. The Rutgers Cancer Institute’s priority is to have diverse participation in clinical research, including ethnicity, race, gender, and lifespan. Minority representation in clinical trials and access to precision oncology initiatives and treatments are top priorities of the Community Cancer Action Board.
